I had such an AWESOME opportunity working with Austin Wintory on this project! Austin is a really good friend of mine whom I always visit every time I go to the LA area where he’s based. He is a brilliant music composer, inspiring person, and he has a terrific heart. And he brought up the idea for collaborating and I REALLY wanted to be a part of it!
We’ve known each other for several years and have also worked together before on other various games he’s written for, like Banner Saga (AND I am also working on Banner Saga 2 with him!).
This song, “Underground”, is the 6th and final “Murder Ballad” (as explained in this video) written in a collaboration with Tripod. Austin wrote out the music in a sort of burst, and then sent it to Tripod without any real idea as to what the lyrics should be.
They then sent him back a demo with lyrics that completely blew his mind. It was pure poetry! And so at that point it was basically done, and Austin said it was one of the quickest, easiest collaborations imaginable because they were perfectly in sync. How awesome it that!?
I asked Austin to explain a little more about the song and he said,
“The song itself was really meant to be served as an emotional catharsis for the end of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. The score reached its apex in the final scenes and it needed some sort of last statement to help let it all go. That’s what this meant to be, but it ended up being much more than that – a song about letting go to lost loved ones, and lost foes. I suffered some intense personal losses during the writing of this score. Both my father and one of my best friends were lost to cancer while writing it all, and this song became a sort of outlet for it.”
Like Austin, I too have lost my pop to cancer, and I sing this song as a tribute to all that have lost a loved one.
